IGNOU BSc (General) vs BSc (Specialization)

BSc at IGNOU is offered as a specialized course and a general course as well. The difference between these two modes is quite simple. IGNOU BSc (General) has 7 subjects. These are –

1) Botany
2) Physics
3) Geography
4) Geology
5) Mathematics
6) Chemistry
7) Zoology

Students must select 3 courses among these seven. These subjects are sorted into 5 groups. Among these 5 groups students can select only one subject from one group.

Group

Subjects

Group-1 Physics
Group-2 Chemistry
Group-3 Mathematics Botany
Group-4 Zoology Geography
Group-5 Geology

BSc general syllabus is a mix of the subjects from the selected 3 courses. For example – if a student selects Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as their IGNOU BSc subjects then they will study core topics from these 3 courses during the 3 years of BSc program. Students can further select elective courses and skill enhancement subjects.

IGNOU BSc (specialization) is different from a general program as it teaches course specific subjects. These are selected by IGNOU with the specialization. Although the core subjects are predetermined by IGNOU, students do get a chance to choose elective and other additional skill enhancing subjects. For example – If students choose to take admission in BSc (Biochemistry) then the core topics will be only from Biochemistry. Every other science based subject will be either as an elective course or as a skill enhancement course.
